Introduction:
“Eterna Hunt” (placeholder title) is a first person survival
game in which the player is thrown into a fantasy world and must build a shelter,
gather resources and defend themselves and survive for seven in game days. “Eterna Hunt” is an open world game, that
will feature a number of different environments and mechanics. It will be a PC
game built using the Unity 2017 engine. This game is intended for an audience
of 12+ due to minor violence.
Description:
You wake up
from a deep slumber and find yourself at the edge of a dense unnaturally
coloured fairy forest with giant trees and plants with absolutely nothing in
your inventory besides an empty journal and a stick of charcoal. You can see a
looming volcano and a tundra in the distance. Your stomach rumbles- you’re peckish.
All the surroundings are very foreign and unfamiliar to you. You don’t know how
long you’ll be here for.. the sun is rising in the sky, daylight is burning.
You must construct a shelter to shield yourself from the elements and
surrounding creatures. The creatures you can see now are docile, which would
make good hunting targets. Perhaps you could tame one of these creatures to
have as a companion and help protect you. Though, you don’t know any of these
plants or animals, so you will have to be careful with what you eat so you don’t
poison. You can keep record of edible flora and fauna in your journal.
Night will
soon fall, and you can hear growling the howling in the distance. The peaceful
creatures run for shelter.. and from the incoming hostile mobs. Prepare your
weapons if you haven’t set up your shelter yet- and fight for your life. The
creatures of the night are unforgiving. If you manage to strike some down, you
can use their carcasses to gather meat and parts to make stronger weapons. Be
careful though- it gets extremely cold at night, so you’ll want to make a fur
coat or stick by a fire to avoid taking frost damage. The volcanic area is
unbearably hot, but some gemstones that can be found throughout the map have a
cooling effect.
Civilization
will find you in seven days time, deeming you safe. Can you survive until then?
Key Features
- First person open world survival
- Fantasy elements
- Temperature, day/night cycle, hunger and poison mechanics to make gameplay challenging
- Tamable fauna that protects the player (not set and stone).
- Gameplay is timed- 7 in game days.
Game Genre
“Eterna Hunt” is a first person open world survival game
based in a fantasy setting. The player must survive for 7 in game days in order
to win the game.
Intended Audience
“Eterna Hunt” is intended for an audience of 12+ due to minor
violence and the difficulty of the game. The gameplay of this game is intended
to be challenging with the use of mechanics and would be very difficult for
younger players.
Gameplay
“Eterna Hunt” is a first person open world survival game that
runs over the course of 7 in game days in which the player must survive to
complete the game. The player must construct a shelter to shield from the
elements and the hostile mobs during the night. The player will grow hungry
over the course of the day so they must gather plants and hunt to sustain their
hunger. When hunger reaches 0, the game ends. When the health bar reaches 0,
the game also ends. The player takes damage when exposed to the elements with
no proper equipment, when poisoned and when attacked. These can be combated by
consuming an antidote, constructing protective clothing and staying near fire.
The player can also tame certain fauna that will be their companion and fight
for the player.
Resources required
- Unity 2017 assets for models of the flora and fauna of the game would be required, along
with a multitude of textures to use in the terrain and for the flora and fauna.
Models can also be created manually if there are no existing assets that would
suit the game, though tutorials would be needed to execute this.
- Script for required mechanics such as the health bar, the hunger bar, the temperature mechanic, the poison mechanic and the tamable fauna mechanic. There are many existing tutorials for scripting mechanics that could be used to execute the desired mechanics- such as this tutorial on how to implement a health bar such as this one.
This page contains numerous weather related scripts including cold damage.

Hey Kayleigh,
ReplyDeleteI was reading through your ideas in the game and I have to say that it sounds very good on paper and I can imagine how it would look like considering I have played a game like that on PlayStation.
You said that you wake up in the forest so I will assume that is where the spawn point is and you talked about all the different elements of nature and you must find shelter, I was wondering is it possible to make it suitable to swim in water and if so add deadly and possibly poisonous creatures.
Since you have to survive 7 days what if everyday you survive you get some kind of reward maybe not necessarily an item but maybe health generation for 10 seconds even if it is minimum recovery to make it less difficult.
Other than that I love your idea and I cant wait to see it in action!

well a good day to you Kayleigh.
ReplyDeleteI must say that you have a very nice descriptive way and layout to how you present your blogs here and that I think your game idea is really interesting indeed. Whilst I was extensively reading this I was Reminded that I remember seeing that you were inspired by the likes of a great game like Don't Starve and I can see how it can be interpreted well into your game here. I like the whole aesthetic of giving a simple challenge of surviving for 7 in game days and just the fear of the unknown of what is out there ready to make you it's next meal and it is very interesting to see what you have in mind for these creatures.
All in all, I am very fascinated by the game idea that you have crafted here from the concept the challenge, elements, items and so much more that I look forward to seeing how your game will turn out because I am sure that it will be great no matter what.
Cheerio!!!

Hi Kayleigh,
ReplyDeleteHow are you? I hope that you are well. First of all, I would like to say that I like your game idea. I am also doing an open world, first person, survival game so I enjoyed ready your post. You also gave me some ideas on some things I haven't thought about yet so thanks for that. Maybe we could touch base after development starts so we can help each other because we have similar games.
One question I would like to ask you is there any storline to the story? As in are there any missions to the story or is it just a complete battle with the elements. Just food for thought. I hope you do well.
Best of luck!
Jordan
Hey Kay(leigh),
ReplyDeleteI read through your game idea and it seems really cool, sounds like minecraft on roids at first glance. I like the genre you're going for of open world survival, it definitely stands out from what most people are doing which seems to be arcade style games. I especially like your concepts of needing antidote and needing protective clothing to protect you against the elements, I think a lot of survival games overlook those kind of features and it takes away from their realism.
One feature that i'm required by the moodle document to suggest is maybe something along the lines of a sanity meter like in the game "Don't Starve", works like a health/hunger bar but it goes down the longer you spend in the dark, the lower it gets your character might hallucinate or your controls might get inverted or something, you get the idea.
Anyway cool game,
Cya!

Hi Kayleigh,
ReplyDeleteI love how your games is coming along so far. I love the simple premise of surviving a certain of days to wait for rescue. Instead of surviving for as long as possible, this approach means that you can raise the stakes of survival as the more days pass in a more scripted and controlled manner to avoid weird inconsistencies that comes from endless survival games.
I'm wondering, can you add a score system for the game? Everyone will beat the game at some stage and keeping a score can show them how well they have survived compared to others. For example, the amount of health left, damage sustained, animals hunted and tamed, materials harvested, etc. can all be added to the score counter which by the end will accumulate into the final score. When the game is completed, people can be given a score which evaluates how efficiently they have survived.
This is all I can think of right now. Good luck with your project.
Have a nice day!

Hi Kayleigh,
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of having to defend yourself from the elements. I always see a lot of games only focus on the enemies at night so I think this feature makes your game really unique.
What kind of things will you be able to craft a shelter out of? I think it would be good if there was different levels of structure strength depending on the resource you choose to build you shelter out of.
I was wondering what ways are you thinking of being able to tame these docile creatures? Will there only be one way or will there be a few? I think it would be good to have a variety if possible. This would make it more fun for the player and less repetitive.
I was also wondering will there be a variety of weapons in your game. I think the more you have, the more fun it will be for the player finding or crafting new weapons as they go throughout the game.
I look forward to playing your finished game.
